Todo mundo sabe que eu AMOOOO Minneapolis e toda vez que sai uma matéria dessas eu lembro como Deus É MESMO PAI e escolheu a dedo o lugar para me enviar. #LoveMN

O jornalista destacou que as vantagens que a cidade possui:

"A blend of geographical blessings and thoughtful city planning—all of which, to an outsider, looks deceptively boring".

Uma mistura de bençãos geográficas e uma cidade atenciosamente planejada - o que, para alguém de fora, pode enganosamente parecer entediante.  

O especialista da Universidade de Minnesota também explicou:

“There is something about Minneapolis that makes us unusually good at building and keeping large companies.”

Existe algo em Minneapolis que nos faz ser bons em construir e manter grandes empresas.

A teoria é do professor é de que:

"Minneapolis is so successful at turning medium-size companies into giants because its most important resource never leaves the city: educated managers of every level, who can work at just about any company. Shaver looked at the outward migration of employed, college-educated people who earn at least twice the national average income and found that of the 25 largest American cities, only one had a lower rate of outflow than Minneapolis".

Minneapolis é bem-sucedida em transformar médias-empresas em gigantes porque o seu maior recurso nunca abandona a cidade: gerentes graduados de todos os níveis, que podem trabalhar em qualquer empresa. O professor Shaver pesquisou a migração de pessoas empregadas e com educação superior cuja renda é, no mínimo, o dobro da média nacional  e descobriu que das 25 maiores cidades americanas, apenas uma possui a taxa de migração menor do que Minneapolis. 

Outro fator que faz toda diferença e que é meu sonho para o Brasil: equalização fiscal

The Twin Cities’ housing and tax-sharing policies have resulted in lots of good neighborhoods with good schools that are affordable for young graduates and remain nice to live in even as their paychecks rise. This, in turn, has nurtured a deep bench of 30- and 40-something managers, who support the growth of large companies, and whose taxes flow to poorer neighborhoods, where families have relatively good odds of moving into the middle class.

As políticas de moradia e divisão de impostos nas Twin Cities resultaram em vários bairros de custo acessível e com ótimas escolas de educação infantil que continuam sendo bons para morar enquanto os salários sobem. Isso, por sua vez, tem cultivado um montante de 30 e 40 gerentes, que apoiam o crescimento de grandes companhias, cujos impostos são direcionados para bairros mais pobres, onde famílias possuem boas chances de migrar para a classe média. 

Caso estejam pensando em algum lugar para passar uma temporada nos EUA, eu altamente recomendo Minnesota. Claro que os privilégios e situação são diferentes para cidadãos e expatriados, mas, de modo geral, é um lugar super agradável para se estar.

Friaca histórica em Minnesota

"Vanessa, é verdade que está fazendo esse frio todo?" Então, sim, é verdade. A temperatura do vento estava -45 (tanto faz se Celcius ou Fahrenheit porque abaixo de -40 é tudo a mesma coisa) no momento deste print.

O "vortex polar" é a pior onda de frio em 20 anos e, como não poderia ser diferente, o destino fez com que eu morasse aqui justamente durante esse maravilhoso evento da natureza. Obrigada Minnesota por me proporcionar essa ~experiência de vida~ que, com certeza (!), não terei novamente, a não ser que viaje para a Sibéria ou viva até a próxima Era do Gelo.

Ah, e eu tô bem, dentro de casa é quentinho e as aulas foram canceladas :)

English as a Second Language in Minnesota - Au Pair

Gente, realizei que eu nunca falei sobre minha escola aqui. Então, vou aproveitar que hoje é Thanksgiving e eu estou empolgadinha. 

Bom, não é segredo para ninguém que meu inglês era praticamente inexistente quando cheguei nos EUA. Na verdade, fiz seis meses do curso Say It! na Cultura Inglesa, mas nem é necessário explicar o porquê seis meses não são suficientes para aprender outra língua, né? Especialmente se as aulas forem de duas horas por semana. Mas, com toda certeza do universo, se não fossem os seis meses de curso as coisas teriam sido piores no início. 

Na training school, em New York, Deus teve misericórdia e clareou minha mente para eu entender o que a professora falava. Lembro da minha cabeça doer à noite, pois eu não podia desviar minha atenção da aula nem para meu cérebro respirar por 3 segundos, senão eu perdia o fio da meada. E o mais interessante de tudo isso é que eu era uma das alunas mais participativas, respondia perguntas e ajudei meu grupo a ganhar um quiz. Acho que um dos principais fatores que contribuíram para meu "bom" desempenho na training school é que eu não via as brasileiras e não tinha com quem conversar em português. Minhas colegas de quarto eram uma alemã e uma francesa, na minha classe 80% era alemão, 10% Spanish speaker, 8% de diferentes países europeus, uma chinesa  e apenas eu Portuguese speaker. 

Então, diante disso, uma das primeiras coisas que fiz quando cheguei em Minnesota foi procurar um curso de inglês para fazer. O Internacional Education Center foi uma dica da minha host mom. A escola é exclusiva para imigrantes e refugiados (o que por sinal tem demais em MN, quero dizer, em todo os EUA). A escola é um dos locais mais interessantes que já estive. Conheci pessoas de lugares que nem sabia que existiam (#shame). Me sinto dentro de um caldeirão cultural quando estou lá e aprendo muito sobre o mundo. Minha professora é uma graça, muito simpática, polite e parece amar o que faz. 

Duas turmas reunidas para celebrar o Thanksgiving 

O único ponto "negativo" para quem precisa aprender inglês em um ano é que, obviamente, os colegas de classe também não possuem um bom nível de inglês e isso atrasa o aprendizado do dia a dia, se comparado com o envolvimento direto com americanos (numa faculdade, por exemplo). 

Pontos positivos:

- Bons professores

- Boa localização

- Diversas opções de classe, como preparação para TOEFL e para conseguir o Green Card. 

- Conhecer gente do mundo inteiro com muita história para contar. 

Pontos negativos: 

- Poucos English speakers nativos.

Twins Cities and the secret of happiness

Super curti esta matéria sobre o porquê de Minneapolis e sua irmã gêmea, Saint Paul, serem a área metropolitana mais saudável, mais voltada para o bem-estar e mais feliz dos Estados Unidos.

Eu sou uma pessoa cautelosa e não vou declarar meu amor incondicional por Minnesota até conhecer o inverno daqui (que tem fama de ultra hard), mas até o momento, sem sombras de dúvidas, é o lugar mais agradável - e funcional - para viver que já tive a oportunidade de conhecer.

Passeio pelos lagos de Minneapolis

Bom, eu já comentei no blog que Minneapolis é conhecida como a "Cidade dos Lagos". São 24 lagos espalhados pra todo lado. Pequenos ou grandes, não importa, por onde você anda aqui é possível encontrar uma "aguinha" em algum canto. É lindo! Eu amo as paisagens daqui, principalmente porque a quantidade de água faz com que o local seja muito arborizado, enfim, é super agradável.

1 - Calhoun Lake 

Provavelmenteé o lago mais pop da cidade. Tem milhares de fotos no instagram e é super bem frequentado. Fiz algumas imagens do Calhoun, mas tive de editar o vídeo abaixo no próprio YouTube, então, deem um desconto, please.

2 - Lake Harriet

O Harriet é pertinho do Calhoun. Hoje, eu e minha amiga-aupair-francesa fizemos o caminho à pé. Na verdade, voltamos do lago para nossas casas caminhando, cerca de oito quilômetros, ótimo programinha para fim de outono.

Guthrie Theater

Esta é uma preciosa dica para turistas em Minneapolis.

O Guthrie Theater possui um "Endless Bridge" com vista para as pontes e quedas do Rio Mississippi. Os visitantes podem subir e apreciar a vista sem custo algum. Isso mesmo people, é free.

Tive a alegria de visitar o observatório em um dia liiiiindo - céu azul e clima de fim de verão.

Guthrie was drawn to Minneapolis/St. Paul because of its location in the heartland of America, the vitality of the cultural community, the presence of a large state university and many small colleges, and the enthusiasm shown by the Upper Midwest for the new theater project.

50 years later and this amazing theater is still providing the Midwest with unbeatable entertainment!

The Cheesecake Factory

Sorry folks,

Acho que faz uma década que não atualizo o blog. Pois então, vou começar tirar a poeira com a dica do The Cheesecake Factory. Sim, muitas pessoas já conhecem. Algumas de ouvir falar e outras de experimentar. Mas vou dizer que é, definitivamente, o melhor cheesecake que eu já tive o deleite de saborear até o dia de hoje.

Degustei ~apenas~ dois inesquecíveis sabores. Tenho tentado não ir lá com frequência, afinal, não preciso procurar mais tentações para engordar, elas vêem até mim diariamente.

Restautante no Southdale mall em Edina, Minnesota. 

Bom, mas nem só de cheesecake vive o restaurante. Eles têm a "sopa do dia" que sempre é uma delícia - as duas vezes que estive lá pedi sopa :) E sempre é servida com verdadeiros french breads (qualidade atestada pela minha amiga-aupair-francesa).

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

Com certeza, se você está planejando visitar Minneapolis (ou morar) e pesquisou sobre a cidade no Google, as primeiras imagens que viu foi da Spoonbridge and Cherry - a mais famosa escultura do Sculpture Garden.

E eu, quem diria, já visitei o Sculpture Garden três vezes em um mês de Minnesota. Não me arrependi em nenhuma das vezes e pretendo voltar no auge do outono e do inverno para ter fotografias da Cherry em todas as estações.

O lugar é super interessante e o clima de "família feliz", bem característico de Minnesota - devo dizer, faz o ambiente ficar ainda mais agradável. Desejo que você vá em um dia lindo, com um céu brilhante e uma boa companhia para deixar as "reflexões artísticas" mais divertidas.

Minnesota Gophers' Game

Definitivamente, quem vem aos Estados Unidos precisa ir ao estádio assistir a um jogo de football americano. É muito divertido! Minha amiga-aupair-francesa até disse "como é possível isso não ser famoso fora dos USA? It's really funny!".

Bom, para deixar claro, minha primeira vez em um jogo de football americano foi no Homecoming 2013 da Universidade de Minnesota. Então, teve de tudo que vemos nos filmes: mascote enlouquecendo a galera, dois grupos de team leaders, rei e rainha, uma mega banda que dava um show em todos os intervalos, muita torcida etc.

Eu amei a experiência, óbvio.

Minnesota Twins' Game

Um jogo de baseball com certeza é uma experiência bem americana para você viver quando estiver em Minneapolis. Ontem eu fui ao jogo do Twins contra o Indians e gostei, nem tanto como eu gostei de football americano, mas vale os dólares - claro, se você comprar os seats mais baratinhos, não acho que vale a pena pagar quase $100 para ver baseball.

Brit's Pub em Minneapolis

Um lugar suuuuuper legal para você ir quando estiver em Minneapolis é o Brit's Pub. Como o nome já diz, o pub é um pedacinho do Reino Unido na cidade dos lagos. Fui lá dia desses e amei.

Food: meu pedido foi uma sopa tradicional da Escócia, chamada Cock-a-leekie. Uma maravilha britânica. Depois de muita conversa divertida com os amigos, senti o cheirinho de café novo e pedi um com creme. Tudo isso, mais a tip do garçon, ficou por por $10 dólares. #choquei

É óbvio que, por ser um pub, lá em todo o tipo de beverages e comidas apropriadas para acompanhar também. Então, enjoy.

Boliche em Minneapolis

Como eu disse anteriormente, tenho a pretensão de escrever dicas sobre a região de Minneapolis. Então, vou começar indicando o boliche que fui ontem à noite. É de graça, gente!!!

O lugar chama Park Tavern Bowling & Entertainment Center e às terças-feiras três partidas de boliche e três bebidas são free para as madames (mulher não paga). 

O ambiente é divertido, tem muita música para empolgar o jogo e a galera que vai é bem tranquila. Enfim, eu recomendo.

Primeiro Au Pair Meeting

Isso mesmo. Cheguei na sexta-feira e logo no domingo tive meu primeiro Au Pair Meeting. Ainda bem que foi ótimo :)

O Au Pair Meeting consiste em um encontro para conhecer e conversar com Au Pairs que estão no mesmo grupo, ou seja, sob orientação da mesma Local Childcare Coordinator (LCC).

Esse aconteceu durante um passeio de barco no St. Croix River, onde fica a divisa do estado de Minnesota com Wisconsin. Conheci garotas francesas, mexicanas, espanholas e uma brasileira \o/

E fiz várias fotos também :)

Cheguei nos EUA #2 - Au Pair em Minnesota

Depois da semana na Escola de Treinamento da Cultural Care nós fomos enviados para as host familys. Cheguei em Minnesota dia 23 de agosto, numa sexta-feira. 

A viagem foi tranquila e não enfrentei dificuldade nos aeroportos, afinal a dinâmica em todos eles é bem parecida. Além disso, estava acompanhada de dois Au Pairs (isso mesmo: dois e não duas. Eram um menino alemão e uma menina francesa) que vieram no mesmo vôo. 

Minha host family mora em Edina, uma das cidades vizinhas de Minneapolis, a capital de Minnesota. Bom, posso dizer que já achei tudo lindo quando ainda estava no avião esperando o pouso. A região é cheia de lagos e árvores, um visual maravilhoso. 

Na primeira semana, minha HM ( host mom) me levou para conhecer o Sculpture Garden - famoso ponto turístico em Minneapolis; a Westminster Presbyterian Church - belíssima. Conheci algumas garages sales - lojinhas que as pessoas fazem nas garagens durante o verão. Tomamos café numa padaria linda de Edina e depois fomos de bicicleta ao Harriet Lake. À noite jantamos num restaurante vietnamita m-a-r-a-v-i-l-h-o-s-o, de um tempero impressionante. Além, é claro, do maior shopping dos Estados Unidos da América, o Mall of America e da State Fair - a exposição agropecuária de Minnesota. Como não se sentir em casa?

Uma ótima ideia para as estantes de livros em Brasília. Essas casinhas têm portinhas que protegem os livros.

As garages sales são famosas por serem baratas. Não é o caso do exemplo acima, mas acredito que essas peças sejam de colecionador, por isso o preço salgado. 

Enfim, tudo lindo e maravilhoso, graças a Deus!
